Talking Subs with Daniel Ballesteros and Joel Marco
1. Tell us about Sub Cultured
Sub Cultured is a locally owned restaurant serving specialty sandwiches, fresh salads, and soup. Every menu item is made to order using only the best possible ingredients we can find. For example, our sandwiches are made with Cinotti’s bread, baked fresh daily right here in Jacksonville Beach.
2. What’s the ambiance like at Sub Cultured?
We like to call it our food truck without wheels. It is cozy and very friendly. We have a small dining room, and easy window for take out. We serve both lunch and dinner although our lunch crowd tends to be larger.
3. Can you make a few recommendations?
If it’s your first visit we’d recommend The Miami Cuban. We’re both from Miami and we take pride in making this sandwich right! Our in-house mojo-roasted pork shoulder speaks for itself.
Before opening our restaurant we spent 5 years making our Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches outside of the Home Depot on Atlantic and Girvin. During that time we became well known for our Philly’s and many people have told us we have the best Philly in town. Our Philly's are made to order with all the fixings of your choice - grilled onions, peppers, and cheese of course.
A personal favorite is The Godfather, a sandwich made with fresh Boar's Head Italian cold cut ham, capicola, salami, aged provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onion, all served up with our homemade creamy Italian dressing.
4. What are some customer favorites?
For our sandwiches it’s a tie between the Philly and Cuban. For our salads we have another tie, between our Chicken Caesar and our Craisin Goat Salad. The Chicken Caesar is made with fresh all-natural chicken grilled to order, romaine lettuce, parmesan Romano asiago mix, cherry tomatoes and house Caesar dressing. Our Craisin Goat Salad is made with spinach, goat cheese, candied almonds, red onion, and Craisins, all topped with our house balsamic vinaigrette.
5. Any hidden gems?
Yes, a few of them! Poutine is our nod to Canadian street food - they’re French Fries covered in white cheddar cheese curds and house beef gravy. For our vegetarian friends we have a Portobello Philly, which is made with grilled portobellos, onion, peppers, spinach, provolone cheese and house garlic aioli.
We also serve up a wonderful selection of real sugar, old fashioned sodas. Our top seller is Boylan’s Creamy Red Birch Beer.
6. Can you tell us about yourselves?
Sub Cultured is owned by Daniel Ballesteros and Joel Marco. Neither of us has owned a restaurant before but Daniel has owned two food stands outside of Home Depots in Jacksonville for over five years.
