1. Tell us about Firehouse Subs.
Firehouse Subs was founded in Jacksonville in 1994 by former firefighting brothers, Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen. Firehouse Subs has now grown to more than 525 locations.
2. What makes Firehouse Subs special?
Firehouse Subs features Specialty Subs such as the No. 1 selling Hook & Ladder® (pictured above) and the New York Steamer®, both named after fire trucks.
All large Specialty Subs boast a half-pound of meat. Firehouse Subs’ intense flavors result from a unique steaming method, which perfectly complements the natural qualities of the premium meats and cheeses.
Firehouse Subs is based on the founding family’s 200 years of firefighting heritage, restaurants display local memorabilia, images donated by area fire departments and a custom hand-painted mural.

5. What's the most popular item?
The Hook & Ladder is the No.1 selling sub. It includes Smoked Turkey and Virginia Honey Ham smothered with Monterey Jack cheese served Fully Involved®.
6. What are Chris and Robin's favorite items?
Chris Sorensen’s favorite is the Smoked Turkey Breast served with smoked turkey breast, provolone cheese and served Fully Involved® with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and a dill pickle spear on the side.
Robin Sorensen’s favorite is the Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket™ (pictured below) loaded with a quarter pound of freshly sliced USDA choice beef brisket smoked for at least 10 hours in an authentic smokehouse. The brisket is steamed with melted cheddar cheese, piled high atop a toasted sub roll, then topped off with a special combination of sauces, including Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce.
7. Last year Firehouse Subs installed the Coca Cola Freestyle drink dispenser in its restaurants. Can you tell us what that is and what the customer reaction has been?
The Fountain provides 120+ sparkling and still beverage brands. The sleek, stylish unit is touch-screen operated with regular and low-calorie beverage brands, many exclusive to Coca-Cola Freestyle. Guests choose from endless possibilities many never before marketed in the United States. Choices include brands such as caffeine-free Diet Coke® with Lime, Fanta® Peach, Minute Maid® Light Orange Lemonade and the top selling non-carbonated fountain drink, Cherry Lime-Aid®, an exclusive original recipe served with fresh squeezed lime.
8. Can you tell us about the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation?
In 2005, Firehouse Subs created the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment, and educational opportunities to first-responders. Through the non-profit 501(c)(3), Firehouse Subs has given $4.5 million to hometown heroes in 31 states and Puerto Rico.
The Foundation is dedicated to improving the life-saving capabilities of emergency service entities in communities served by Firehouse Subs by providing funding, resources and support to public safety entities.
Individual restaurants raise money through the sale of pickle buckets, cash donations at the counter and the “Round Up” program, which allows guests the opportunity to “round up” their bill to the nearest dollar. All funds are in turn given back to the Foundation. An annual Men’s Doubles Tennis Tournament also provides a chance for the local Jacksonville community to come out and show their support for the organization.
Each October, the Foundation also sponsors Fire Safety Month, dedicated to providing fire safety education. During the month, fire safety medallions are sold at each store in $1 or $5 increments. Patrons sign the medallion and it is placed in restaurants creating a mural of support for those who serve the community
9. You have a lot of hot sauces...
Firehouse Subs customers are true hot sauce fanatics and each restaurant offers guests a choice of at least 50 different sauces, including Firehouse’s signature sauce, Captain Sorensen’s® Datil Pepper Hot Sauce. The special recipe Datil pepper hot sauce is named in honor of Captain Robert Sorensen, a 43-year firefighting veteran, and father of Firehouse founders Chris and Robin.
10. Can you tell us about the murals in your restaurants?
Every restaurant is different and depicts the local community. Each mural is hand-painted by local Jacksonville artist Joe Puskas aka Joe Artbrush.
11. What about those pickle buckets...
Our pickle buckets are 5 gallons each and are sold to the community for $2 each. This raises funds for the Foundation and keeps the buckets out of landfills. There are a lot of things you can do with a pickle bucket!
12. Free birthday subs?
Yes! Just show your ID on your birthday and a medium sub of your choice is on us. No coupon necessary.
